Gertrude (Norby) Crowell, 93, of Osage, died Monday (March 23, 2009) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Gertrude was born Dec. 27, 1915, in rural Osage, the daughter of Hjalmer and Matilda (Olsen) Norby. She graduated from Osage High School and was also a graduate of Hamilton Business College in Mason City.
She was united in marriage to Glenn Crowell on June 18, 1939, at the Osage Lutheran Church. She was a lifetime member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church.
Gertrude enjoyed making quilts, giving away hundreds of quilts to the Lutheran World Relief, Faith Lutheran Home, various other organizations and family and friends. She was a member of the "Sewing Club," which was a social and work group of eight couples who farmed and raised families together since the 1940s.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2009, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave., Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 t0 6 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church.
The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of Faith Lutheran Home, especially the nurses and nursing assistants.
Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.
Gertrude is survived by two daughters, Judy Winegar, of Davenport, and Carolyn Crowell, of Iowa City; one brother, Harvey (Phyllis) Norby, of St. Ansgar; one sister, Lorraine (Richard) Creager of Sumner; two sisters-in-law, Jean Crowell, of Mason City, and Norma Lines, of Farmington, Minn.; and two granddaughters, Amy and Emily Winegar.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn Crowell in 1994; and a son-in-law, Mark Winegar.
