Elwood Anderson was an avid hunter and fisherman who took his family to a cabin they owned on the Manistee River in northwestern Michigan. He also was an accomplished woodworker and 'tinkerer,' his son [David] said. 'He would have some chore to do and he would just make a tool,' he said. Elwood Anderson used that skill throughout his professional life. As a teen-ager he served as an apprentice mechanic with the Roamer co., a former Kalamazoo carmaker, advancing to the position of testing engineer. He later joined Packard Motor Car Co. as a factory mechanic and was the owner of Anderson Garage, which closed during the Great Depression. In 1940, he reopened a general service garage and later became assistant service manager at Brophy Chevrolet, predecessor of DeNooyer Brothers. He served as service manager from 1953 to 1965, when he retired.
