JOHN H. ALSMILLER, FORMER CLERK OF COURT, CUSTOMS COLLECTOR DIES - SERVED 12 YEARS AS LEGAL AIDE
John H. Alsmiller, clerk of Jefferson Circuit Court from 1934 to 1946 and federal collector of customs here from 1948 to 1952, died at 2:55 a.m. yesterday [April 17, 1955] at St. Joseph Infirmary. He was 54. Alsmiller, who stood 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighed more than 300 pounds, had been in ill health for the past two years. He lived at 122 N. Western Parkway with his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Simon Alsmiller, and a daughter, Lennie Ann. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. J.W. Server. Alsmiller served as circuit clerk for two six-year terms before he was defeated for re-nomination in the 1956 Democratic primary. He also was elected president of the Kentucky Circuit Clerks Association in 1940 for a six-year term. President Harry S. Truman appointed him customs collector but he was ousted in 1952 when his term expired and the Republican Party came into office. Before starting his political career, Alsmiller was employed for 17 years by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. He was a member of the West End Optimist Club. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ratterman's, 2114 W. Market. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery.
