In 1835, two years before Michigan became a state, Henry and Hannah (Walkington) Atkinson sailed from Whitby, England for America. They would disembark at Canada and travel to Detroit, MI. From there they proceeded by horse and wagon to Marshall, MI where they fell in love with the pleasant countryside. They purchased land and built their farm home. Henry & Hannah "Anna" were the parents of Lavinia (1824 - 1902), Mary Ann (1831 - 1896)(Charles Knight) and Hannah (1833 - 1915). His nephew - Thomas Edward Ward related that Henry would conduct religious services in their home for the convenience of the then few residents. His obituary relates "He was one of the best known pioneers, enterprising farmers and most respected citizens." He died on his farm - four miles North of Marshall on July 25, 1881- where he had lived for 46 years. He was 81 years old. Surviving was his widow - Hannah - who would pass away two months later on August 5, 1881 t the age of 84. - Their unmarried daughter - Hannah Atkinson, - Daughter Mary Ann (Mrs. Charles Knight) and Lavinia (Mrs Edward Ward).
