Dennis James Ryan, also known as Dennis Bruce Allen and "Mr. Death" is buried in Fawkner Cemetery. His headstone has no inscription on it. Dennis was 35 when he died.

Melbourne, Australia is renowned for it's colourful past when it comes to criminals. Self proclaimed "Mr Death" Dennis Bruce Allen (1951–1987) stood out from the crowd in the early 80′s. Dennis had served just 4 years of a 14 year stretch for raping a 19 year old girl in 1973 when he was released from prison, he then helped hide his brother who had just escaped from a youth detention center. He got caught hiding him, and ended up inside again. The prison then stupidly granted him a day's release to visit his grandparents, he did a runner instead and was later found by police in a bar with a prostitute by his side, and he was drunk, vomiting blood.
After he was released from Prison in 1982, Dennis started a heroin dealing business in one of Melbourne's crappier suburbs, Richmond. Dennis did a good enough trade to allow him to pay cash for 4 homes in the same Richmond street, one which he lived in and another his mother converted into a brothel, where you could also buy drugs through a gloryhole. It is believed he turned over a profit of $70,000 per week.
Dennis was one of the son's of super-***** Kath Pettingill, the crime matriarch of the Pettingill clan, a feared Melbourne criminal group/crime family. Dennis spent a lot of his time at the nearby Cherry Tree Hotel in Richmond, drinking Southern Comfort and living it up on the money he made from drug dealing and trying not to be weighed down by the quarter of a million dollars worth of gold chains he wore around his neck. Mr T aint got **** on Dennis Allen. The cops for the most part, left him alone, Dennis was a good earner for them, both in payoffs, and in being a rat police informant on other criminals he perceived being a threat to the empire.
The Pettingill Clan is an extended crime family that still remains 49 strong and operates out of Richmond. The groups main activities include drugs, vice and robbery. The Matriarch Kath Pettingill used to run several brothels in the Richmond area.
In 1984 Dennis was with his entourage drinking and listening to the horse racing at home. A guy named Wayne Stanhope arrived and joined the drinking, visiting the bar, shooting up speed, in between horse racing on the radio (no doubt dennis had big money bet on some of the races). Into the night this went, the horse racing replaced by music on Dennis's record player, more alcohol, more drugs consumed.
At some point, Wayne got up and changed the LP. Dennis pulled a gun and shot Wayne in the head and upper body until he ran out of bullets. He then went in a bedroom, got another gun, and emptied that into Wayne's now clearly dead head at point blank. Just to be sure, he made his girlfriend get a kitchen knife, and he cut Wayne's throat as well. Wayne was looking pretty dead. No one had a clue why Dennis had killed him. Maybe Dennis had issues with people ****ing with his record player. Who knows.
Dennis ordered his three brothers to dispose of the body. It's never been found. His car was burned and later recovered by police.
Next on the list was a 30 year-old prostitute named Helga Wagnegg, Dennis suspected her of being a police informant. Although he got away with a lot of stuff, and probably paid off local cops, he still had the drug squad and detectives to contend with. The cops had recently raided his property and found drugs, explosives and guns. Dennis was pissed off and decided Helga needed to die. A lethal injection, or ‘hot shot' of heroin seemed like good choice. Dennis had plenty of that around still.
Dennis invited her over and injected her with heroin over two hours in his backyard, including a shot in her neck. He then had his brother fetch a bucket of water from the Yarra river and he submerged her head in it, so it looked like somehow she performed the winning combination of OD'ing on a huge amount of heroin and drowning in a river. Great thinking Dennis.
Another day of drinking, another guest. In 1985 a 33 year-old guy named Anton Kenny was at Dennis's home drinking with the group. Anton had been kicked out of the Hells Angels for being a police informant. It's been said Anton made the mistake of calling Dennis a rat. Either way, the party ended when Dennis shot Anton 5 times and cut his legs off with a chainsaw, so he'd fit in a 44 gallon drum. The drum went into the river and Dennis went into the books as a guy you do not **** with. People paid him promptly on time for drugs and other services unsurprisingly.
Come 1986 and Dennis was in a lot of trouble. Years of drugs and alcohol had taken it's toll, his heart was ****ed, his heath was gone. His business was slipping with contenders for the heroin trade and people were ratting him out to police. Meanwhile, the cops had enough on him to charge him with the murder of Wayne Stanhope. His previous party guests were now police witnesses.
Always escaping the law somehow, Dennis pulled off a major win against his murder trial in 1987. He died. The years of drug abuse had finally caught up with him, and his heart just stopped working one day. By then he was confined to a wheelchair and had lost 20 kilos from his tattooed street-fighters body. He was 36 years old.
Pieces of his heart actually broke off after decades of heavy drug abuse.
The void Dennis left in dealing was taken up by other gangs, his brothers and the Pettingill clan went on with their own careers as criminals that included the murder of police and other crimes that shocked average Australian's. But that's another story. Dennis will best be remembered as a paranoid speed using heroin dealer who killed anyone his paranoia told him too.

But in 1983, she (Wendy Peirce) says, Victor Peirce wanted to leave his criminal past and get a job. He had just been released from Ararat prison after serving two years and they moved into a rented unit in Albert Park, suburbs away from the rest of his family.
But Peirce's half-brother, Dennis Allen, rang and offered to give them a house next to his in Chestnut Street, Richmond.
"Once we moved in, that was the end. Victor was always helping out Dennis. If we hadn't moved there then none of this would have happened — none of the murders, the armed robberies and the drugs. If we hadn't moved there then Victor would be alive today and so would those two police (Tynan and Eyre)."
Allen was a prolific drug dealer in the early 1980s. "I saw Victor with cash, sometimes $50,000, sometimes $100,000. I saw Dennis with $500,000." Allen had many bank accounts but also liked to bury cash so it could never be traced. Much of it was never recovered when he died of natural causes in 1987. "When he got sick he couldn't remember anything. It must all still be buried around Richmond."
Police say Allen was responsible for up to 11 murders and Wendy Peirce says she learned from experience to read the signs when her brother-in-law "was about to go off".
One day in August 1984, she saw Allen turn and look coldly at small-time crook Wayne Stanhope, then turn up the volume of the stereo — to drown the shots he was about to fire. "I told him, not in my house." Allen begrudgingly took Stanhope next door to shoot him, leaving the body in the boot of a car in the street for two days.
Allen was also blamed for the deaths of associates Victor Gouroff and Greg Pasche in 1983, Helga Wagnegg in 1984 and Anton Kenny in 1985.
"Dennis gave Helga Wagnegg pure heroin. They poured buckets of water from the Yarra River down her throat to try and make it look like she drowned. Anton did nothing wrong. There was no reason. Dennis didn't need a reason.
"Victor Gouroff killed Greg Pasche. Dennis killed Gouroff because he didn't get rid of the body properly. Pasche said something out of school and Gouroff stabbed him. He was in the kitchen saying, 'Dennis, help me, help me.' Dennis picked up a bayonet and stabbed him in the head. They dragged him into the backyard and wrapped him up. There was no need for any of this. It was madness."

Dennis Allen (1951–1987) was a Melbourne based drug dealer who was reported to have murdered many victims. He was the oldest son of criminal matriarch Kath Pettingill. He died of heart disease in 1987 in prison custody awaiting trial for murder.
Allen, nicknamed Mr. Death or Mr. D, was believed to have been involved in up to 13 underworld murders, including the dismembering of a Hells Angels biker with a chainsaw. He received a ten-year prison sentence for rape during the 1970s. It is also reported that he was a major drug dealer in the Richmond and South Yarra areas of Melbourne during the 1980s. New South Wales Police Detective-Sergeant Roger Rogerson was convicted of supplying heroin in a deal with Allen, but was acquitted following appeal.
Allen died in 1987 of heart failure; "pieces of his heart actually broke off after decades of heavy drug abuse". He was buried by Father Peter Norden, a Jesuit priest who buried 3 members of the Pettingill family during the 1980s.
