Sharon Cort Ashton, 53, wife of Neil K. Ashton, died Saturday after a 21-month battle with cancer.
She was born in Bangor, a daughter of Joseph F. and Rena Manning Cort, and was a 1963 graduate of Brewer High School. She graduated from the University of Maine in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in education and earned her master's degree in 1968.
She taught in the women's physical education department at the university and later in the physical education department at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts.
In 1979, she began working for the postal service in Merrimack, N.H., as a substitute rural mail carrier, and later in Rutland, Mass., and Old Town before becoming the first rural mail carrier in Orono in 1996.
She also owned and operated Greetings from Sharon, a greeting card distributorship. Throughout her life she was active in and devoted to her church. She served churches in Portland, Merrimack and Worcester, Mass., as president of United Methodist Women. She was involved in mission work and served on or chaired the missions committee at all of those churches as well as at the First United Methodist Church, Brewer. She is a life member of the Girl Scouts and was a troop leader while her daughter was a Scout.
She was an alumni ambassador at the University of Maine, frequently attending college fairs and visiting local high schools.
Her family hosted many Rotary Club Ambassadorial Scholars over the years.
She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and to the Caribbean and had attended weddings in Tokyo and Kyoto for two special former students.
As a Scout leader, she discovered whitewater rafting and made it a point to make at least one trip every summer. She was a regular at Little League and basketball games and could be counted on when a carload of kids had to go somewhere.
Surviving are her husband of 29 years of Brewer; a son, Ward J. Ashton of Nashua, N.H.; two daughters, Shari K. and Victoria C. Ashton, both of Brewer; and a brother, Robert Cort of Winterport.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 55 South Main St. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 40 South Main St. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
