CIVIL WAR VETERAN WIDOW
Minerva was the daughter of Aroic Miles Hill and Adeline A. (Congdon) Hill.
She was the widow of Charles L. Allen. They had married January 4, 1872 in Tomah, Wisconsin by a Justice of the Peace. The couple divorced about 1873; however, they remarried in August 1878 in Rapid City, Dakota Territory. Charles L. Allen was a civil war veteran, having enlisted July 17, 1861, having served with Co. H of the 6th Iowa Infantry, and having been discharged July 16, 1864 in Rosswell, Georgia.
Minerva was the mother of one son from a former marriage, Harry M. Shearer, whom she listed as living at 5668 Broadway, Oakland, California in 1922.
She and her husband had lived in Rapid City, South Dakota and vicinity until 1899, at which time they moved to Seattle, Washington, where they lived until removing to Lake Chelan in 1906. In the latter part of October, 1909, her husband went back to Rapid City, South Dakoka to attend to some business, was taken ill and died in a hotel there on December 6, 1909. She spent some months in South Dakota to settle the estate.
Admitted to the Washington Veterans Home August 29, 1922, she was receiving a pension of $30 a month. She died age 68 years on November 27, 1922 and is buried in the Veterans' Home Cemetery.
