TERRE HAUTE Esther Malissa Nixon Alman, 97, of Terre Haute died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, in Ben Hur Nursing Home of Crawfordsville. She was born May 19, 1909, in Farmersburg to Walter Nixon and Minta Ann Carrithers Nixon. She graduated from Farmersburg High School and Indiana State Teachers College (Indiana Normal School) in 1931.

She married Herbert Alman, who preceded her in death in 1965. She is survived by one daughter, Shirley O'Neall and husband David of Crawfordsville; one daughter-in-law, Lila Alman Davidson of Fort Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren, Pam Johnson and husband Ron of Danville, Cheryl Parsons and husband Chet of Lagoda, Judy Cunningham of Marietta, Ga., Lucy Moody and husband Adam of Wafeland, Carl Alman and wife Kim of Shreveport, La., Daniel Alman and wife Joyce of Fort Worth, and Sarah Hoflitch and husband Ben of Austin, Texas; eight great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, David Herbert Alman, in 1989; and one sister, Elva May Boyle.

She was Poet Laureate of Indiana, 1984-1985, and in 1989, she won the Terre Haute Award in Arts Division. She organized and was a charter member of the Terre Haute Poet's Study Club, and for many years until her death published "The Poet's Roundtable," a poetry newsletter sent to members around the world. She was a charter member of the Indiana State Federation of Poetry Clubs and the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, through which "The Poet's Roundtable" took first place in 1983. She was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church in Terre Haute.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home with the Rev. Linda Peters officiating. Calling hours are 12 to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park.
