The following story tells of the accidental death of Richard Adams, a grandson of former Bonaparte people, Mrs. Bessie Gardner of Burlington and Tom Gardner of Longmont, Colo.:

Richard George Adams, 21 year old son of Mrs. Clarice V. Adams of 1727 Page, Burlington, was killed in a traffic accident near Gulfport, Ill., shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 1961.

Adams was a passenger in an automobile driven by his brother, 25 year old Robert Adams, who suffered scalp lacerations and probably fractured ribs. He was reported in good condition at Mercy hospital Saturday afternoon.

The body of Richard Adams was found lying face down in water alongside the road.

James Rogers, Henderson county sheriff, said the brothers were returning to Burlington. The automobile failed to make the curve at the entrance to Crystal Lake club, just east of Gulfport.

The car left Highway 34 and struck the guard rail. It sheared off a utility pole and went down an embankment.

Illinois state troopers, who helped Rogers at the scene, are continuing the investigation.

Richard George Royalton Adams was born April 9, 1940 at Bruneau, Idaho, the son of Benham and Clarice Gardner Adams. He attended Perkins school and was graduated from Burlington High school. Adams was a student at Iowa Wesleyan college when he died.

Richard also was a member of Westminster Community church in Burlington and the Civil Air Patrol.

Surviving are his parents; two brothers, Robert and Michael, all of Burlington; a sister, Jeanne Dirksen, Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandparents, Mrs. Bessie Gardner, Burlington; Mrs. Frank Mahoney, Bruneau, Idaho, and Tom Gardner, Longmont, Colo.; a great-grandmother, Mrs. Mary Wallingford, Cedar Rapids; a niece, Julie Derksen, of Colorado; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services for Richard were held Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Ellliott-Lunning chapel with interment in Bonaparte cemetery.
