A tribute to the memory of Wm. J. Gill, who died at his home near Lewis Station, February 2, 1900 with spinal meningitis. A universal sadness spread over the town of Lewis and vicinity when the news of Mr. Gill's death, which occurred about midday, was carried to the people. Deceased was born in England and sailed over the briny deep with his parents, when only six months old, landing in New York City; settled in Ohio state, near Columbus, where he was raised, and in 1867, he left his parents and emigrated to Missouri. He engaged himself as a farm hand to Samuel Wherry, near where Leeton is now located. After working for Mr. Wherry for several months, he was married to Miss Alpha Chapman. He then purchased a small farm in Johnson county and lived there about 12 years. His health failed and he sold out and went to Colorado but could not stand the climate and returned back home in a few months. He then moved to Lewis Station and bought another small farm, one and one-half miles northwest of Lewis, where he lived until his death. He leaves a companion and nine children to mourn his loss - five boys and four girls, all at his bedside at the time of death with the exception of William, who was in Colorado and did not arrive until several days after his father's death. Burial in Drake's chapel.
