R/143477 Sergeant (Air Gnr.), 419 Sqdn., Royal Canadian Air Force
Son of Edward and Violet Tresa Alsop, of Darlington, Co. Durham.
Age: 20

Killed when Lancaster KB701 aircraft took off from RAF Station Middleton St. George, in County Durham, on a night bombing practice training flight. The bad weather produced a low cloud cover, so the Lancaster was flown at a lower than recommended height. This resulted in the aircraft’s crashing into high ground while flying over the East Moors, north of Helmsley in Yorkshire; it crashed at Potterhouse Farm, on Helmsley Moor near Wombleton, about 15 miles from Sowerby.
The newly-formed crew of seven airmen, all members of RCAF 419 Squadron, perished in this incident. They were:-
RCAF Sergeant Norman Frederick ALSOP,
USAF Second Lieutenant Ernest N. FORDHAM,
RCAF Warrant officer Class II Hubert Gordon GRICE,
RAFVR Sergeant Gwilyn Teifi JONES,
RCAF Pilot Officer James Gordon McMASTER,
RCAF Sergeant Frank Alexander MILNE and
RCAF Pilot Officer Ernest Moir PARSONS.

Division: RCAF 419 (‘Moose’) Squadron (MOTTO: Moosa aswayita (Cree language) [‘Beware of the moose’])

Sergeant Norman Frederick Alsop is commemorated on Page 236 of Canada's Second World War Book of Remembrance.
