From the September 16, 1880 Berea Advertiser Columbia: Died. In Columbia, on Tuesday, September 7 Alice A. Doane, wife of Judd Arthur, aged 25 years.
Again death has come and taken from our midst a loved one who in 1855 as a daughter, Alice, came to cheer the hearts of J. W. Doane and his wife. She was the only child, the pet and pride of the household, the joy and comfort of fond parents who looked upon her as the one to cheer their pathway down the hillside of life. Coming years found her at school a peace-maker, of quiet manner, loved by all.
In April 1878, she became the wife of Judd Arthur her first and only love, the companion of her school days. She and her husband lived with her parents, and it was a happy home indeed. She has gone and "though dead, yet speaketh," by her noble example as a kind and affectionate daughter.
The funeral services were conducted on Thursday, at the Baptist Church by Rev. L. Yarneall, a former pastor, in the presence of a large concourse of friends who tender their sympathies to the bereaved family. There is hushed on earth, a voice of gladness; there is a veiled face, whose parting leaves a dark and silent place, by the once joyous hearth. Columbia. Mr. Wm Doane, of Pipestone, Mich., was present at the funeral of Mrs Arthur.
