Robert L. Coffey, EM2c, lost his life on the submarine USS Squalus (SS 192) when it sunk during a test dive off Portsmouth, NH on May 23, 1939. He was one of 26 who drowned in the flooding of the aft compartments of the boat. 33 others survived the initial accident and were resecued by a diving bell over the next two days.
