OBITUARY

(from The Sunday School Missionary, May 1925, a publication of the American Sunday-School Union, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania)

"John Edward Crymes"

A little more than two years ago the columns of the MISSIONARY carried a notice of the appointment of Mr. John E. Crymes as Superintendent of the missionary work in the Southern District. it is now our sad duty to inform our readers and his friends that very suddenly he has been called into the more immediate presence of his Lord, whom he so reverently loved and served with such unfailing devotion and energy.

On the twentieth of March, Mr. Crymes went to the hospital for what appeared to be a minor surgical operation. Complications developed, leading to a physical condition from which he never rallied. He departed this life March 27.

More than the usual sorrow touches our hearts as we make this record of this great loss that has come to us. Truly God's ways are not man's ways ... He seemed to be just prepared for leadership in a great work when he was called away from a field of great opportunity.

Not only so, but from man's viewpoint family considerations appeared to require his continued presence in this life. Mr. Crymes leaves a wife and five children without a father's care; three of these are very young in years. but two years ago, in a spirit bordering upon the heroic, Mrs. Crymes consented to leave her home in the State of Washington and to go with her husband to his new work in the Southland. For him it was a retuning to the land of his boyhood; for her it meant separation from loved one and from friends of a lifetime. But with a fine courage and fortitude, and with and unfaltering faith in the cause they had gone South to represent, Mrs. Crymes has stood by her husband and in every other way has cooperated with him in the work which they both loved and to which they dedicated their lives.

Mr. Crymes' genial disposition; his genuine love for people; his loyalty to the American Sunday-School Union and its work; his devotion to his Master--all united in making him a strong and successful co-worker with his Lord...He was making rapid progress in his efforts to develop the Southern District. We bow before His will and recognize that the Judge of all the earth will do right, and that at the time when we shall know as also we are known, we shall recognize that God has made all things to work together for good.
