The Springdale News from The Winslow American
July 14, 1911
Sunday morning, July 2, at 5:45 o'clock Major John D. (sic) Beardsley passed to the rest of Paradise. The venerable and honored gentleman was the father of Mrs. Joshua B. Whaling, at whose summer home he had been a guest for a brief period when symptoms of a serious but previously unsuspected derangement of his health became apparent. About two weeks prior to his death he was seized with acute appendicitis, complications followed in which the right leg was affected. On Saturday afternoon the courageous sufferer, though but slight hope was extended, submitted to the operation of amputating the limb between the knee and hip joint. Major Beardsley was a native of Canada and loyal to the end to the land of his birth, lying for his last rest with the Union Jack draped across his breast, although his affections for the hills and vales of his summer home had taken so strong a hold on him that he earnestly requested to be buried here. Born Jan. 1, 1837, his age was 74 years and 6 months.
