Martha Clay Moore was the daughter of Robert Irwin Moore and his second wife, Martha Clay. Robert I. Moore was a wealthy merchant with commercial interests in Nashville, Tennessee and a large plantation, Mooreland, in Brentwood, Williamson County just south of Nashville.

On March 28, 1855 in Nashville, Martha Clay Moore married John Patrick Farrelly, an Arkansas native and Tennessee state legislator representing Shelby County. (The burial location of John Patrick Farrelly, Sr. has not been determined, but is likely either Memphis or the Farrelly family cemetery at the Mound Grove plantation about four miles upriver from Arkansas Post, Arkansas County, AR.)

Martha and her son John Patrick Farrelly (1856-1921) converted to Catholicism while staying in Arkansas during the Civil War. Her son was eventually ordained a Catholic priest and later served as the Spiritual Director of the North American College in Rome and as the Catholic Bishop of Cleveland. The Bishop's Find A Grave Memorial number is 30069322.

Martha died in Rome while visiting her son and is buried in the tomb he had purchased for himself. The tomb is reportedly near the Church of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura (St. Lawrence outside the Walls), an ancient basilica which is now part of Verano Cemetery.
