La Verne was born on October 9, 1920 in Duluth, Minnesota, to Oscar F. Anderson and Martha (Helstrom) Anderson. She graduated with honors from Cook High School in 1938. She went on to earn her nursing certificate from Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis. After graduating, she worked at North American Aviation in Culver City, California, where she met and married Robert Curtis. The Curtis family moved back to Minnesota where La Verne worked as an RN at the Virginia Hospital until 1959 when they returned to California. In California, La Verne worked at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena until her retirement in 1982. After her retirement, she divided her time between summers at her home on Lake Vermilion and winters at her residence in Santa Monica, California where she could spend time with her children and grandchildren.
La Verne's passion was her family. She was always there to offer good counsel, encouragement, support and fresh-baked bread. She was a lifelong and active member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Cook, Minnesota. In keeping with the tradition passed down from her mother, she loved to cook and bake, always making sure her family and guests were well fed. She loved travel, especially road trips with her children. The many crocheted items she made over the years are treasured by their recipients. She passed on her love of books and sports to her children.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her brothers William Anderson and Robert Anderson, and sister Dorothy Junkert.
