Emilio Moise Basile was born in the village of Grotta Minarda in the southern Italian province of Avellino (Campania Region) on May 7, 1874, the son of Giuseppe Antonio and Giovannina (Caggiano) Basile. His father had sent his older sons to America and settled in Boston, Massachusetts, and when Emilio was turning 15, he sent him aboard the S.S. "Utopia," bringing two pieces of baggage and berthed at Steerage III. He arrived at The Battery in New York on May 17, 1889, and entrained to Boston to join his older brothers. There, he worked as a barber for a short time, then learned the trade of a tailor, which he followed for the rest of his professional life. In 1895, at age 21, he became a U.S. citizen.
On Feb. 21, 1902, he married Giulia Giudita Bernacchi in Boston and they would have six children. Emilio had his own tailor shop in the North End of Boston from 1912-18 and the family then moved to Medford. He was a member of the Order Sons of Italy in America. He died in Medford at age 84 on March 15, 1959, and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.
