Fell at the Battle of Spion Kop, aged 28. (Dutch: Slag bij Spionkop; Afrikaans: Slag van Spioenkop) was fought about 21 miles west-south-west of Ladysmith on the hilltop of Spioenkop along the Tugela River, Natal in South Africa. The battle was fought between the independent South African Republic and British forces from 23-24 January 1900 as part of the Second Boer War, and resulted in a famous British defeat.
Arthur was the fifth son of William Henry Ablett and Emmeline Sophia Ablett and it is on their grave, in the churchyard of St Mary, South Benfleet, Essex, England, that he is remembered.
