Birth: Nov. 22, 1887
Hawkins County
Tennessee, USA
Death: Apr. 27, 1968

Tennessee, USA

Alvin Fain was born Nov. 22, 1887 at his mother's home in Pumpkin Valley near Eidson (Hawkins County), TN. He was the middle child to Ernest and Amanda Jane Taylor Carter Fain. His father Ernest Fain was a Confederate Sergeant and from a family of slaveowners. It was ironic that his mother's father was a Union corporal who died in Nashville in 1864. Alvin had an older sister Nora Fain (m. John Bowen) and a younger sister Dinah V. Fain (m. Mack Stapleton). He also had three older half-siblings from his mother's previous marriage to the late Henry Kane Carter: Cicero, Andrew Jack and Ida Carter Sizemore.

He was married to Della Price Fain also of the Eidson, TN area. He was a WWI Veteran, a Private, Company D, 318th Machine Gun Battalion. He entered service at Camp Gordon, GA. on Sept. 6, 1917, sailing overseas with the first units from America. He was engaged in several battles, prominent among which was Verdun. He fortunately survived the Great War without injury and returned home to Tennessee. He was a lifelong friend to his fellow army buddy Joe Newman who he gave a home to live in for life down the road from his property on Old Stage Road near Rogersville, TN.

He spent the rest of his life after the war as a farmer and accumulated several sizeable farms and properties during his lifetime. He and Della were the parents of Callie Mae, Olsen, Carl, Gene, Joyce, Yvonne and Deron Fain.
