John Brown Abanathy

John Brown Abanathy, 76, Washington, died Friday, February 23, 2001, at Washington. He was born January 10, 1925, at Pocahontas, Arkansas, the son of Claude Edgar Abanathy and wife Iddie Della Abanathy, nee Poe.

Mr.Abanathy received his schooling in Pocahontas, Arkansas, and graduated from Pocahontas High School. He also attended Southern Baptist College, Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, for two years.

Mr. Abanathy served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He served in the 42nd Infantry in Austria and Germany from February 2, 1944, to June 7, 1946.

Mr. Abanathy was employed as an iron worker for many years retiring from J.S. Alberici.

On April 30, 1988, John was united in marriage to Margaret Hooper. They made their home in Washington.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Washington, Washington American Legion Home, Washington V.F.W. Post, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Iron Workers Local No. 396.

Mr. Abanathy was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carl Abanathy; and three sisters, Berniece Golden, Tommy Abanathy and Geraldine Abanathy.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Abanathy, Washington; three daughters, Johnnie LaValle and husband Guy, Union, Linda Beckman and husband James, Beaufort, and Carla Chitty and husband Michael, Overland Park, Kansas; four stepchildren, Dorliss Sang and husband Robert, Washington, Pam Schmelz and husband Mike, Union, Steve Hooper and wife Vicki, Union, and Terry Hooper and wife Lynn, Columbia; one sister, Ivern Lane, Pocahontas, Arkansas; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 26, at Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington, with Rev. David Armstrong officiating.

Interment was in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Washington.

Memorials to First Christian Church of Washington or donor's choice are preferred.

The Abanathy family was served by Oltmann Funeral Home, Washington.
