Records in Gilmer County, Georgia indicate that the date of birth inscribed on this tombstone is incorrect - and that Edward was born in 1837.
Edward Barnes was son of Brinsley & Nelley Barnes who are listed in 1840 census of Gilmer Co (they had 12 children - 6 sons, 6 daughters). By 1850 census, Brinsley Barnes had died. Nelley Barns, age 50, b iNC, is HH #1280 with seven children (Nelley, 22; William, 20; Corbin 18; John, 16; Ruthey, 14; Edward, 13; Isaac, 11). Son Cornelius, 26, is living alone next-door in HH #1281. Cornelius & Nelley are shown as being born in NC; the younger children were born in GA. The other four Barnes daughters married in 1840s and are listed with their spouses (Margaret Barnes Gentry; Isabella Barnes DeBord; Mary Ann Barnes DeBord; Nancy Barnes Pearcy)
Edward Barnes & Jemima Hyde were married on Aug 4, 1859, Gilmer Co, GA; Bk 2, Pg 169. In 1860 census, Edward is 22; Jemima is 18; in 1870, Edward is 32, Mima is 26; in 1880, Edward is 42, Jemima is 36. Jemima Hyde was daughter of Charles W. & Mary Williams Hyde; Hyde family history says she was born in GA in 1844.
