John Bell, junior, a son of Hannah (née Finch) and John Bell, senior, was born in 1809 in Belmont County, Ohio. His family moved in 1817 to Richland County, and settled in Blooming Grove Township.

John Bell and "Merilda" Mead were married on 30 December 1830 in Huron County, Ohio. The couple and their children were enumerated in 1840, 1850 and 1860 in Ripley Township, Huron County. In addition to farming, John Bell, junior, worked as a tanner. In 1840, the Methodist Episcopal Church licensed him to lead worship services and undertake pastoral visits as a local preacher. Marilda passed away in 1867.

John Bell and Miss Elizabeth "Lipset" were married on 12 July 1868 in Richland County. He passed away in 1879, and his widow remarried in 1890.

John Bell, eldest son of Robert Bell, was born in November, 1781, in New Jersey. In 1803 he married Hannah Finch, who was born in Rhode Island in 1785, and came to Belmont county [Ohio] with her parents. To her marriage with Mr. Bell seven children were born in Belmont county, namely: [...fourth ] John who died in Richland county, but lived in Ripley, Huron county, where he was a tanner [...]" (Bio. of David S. Bell received a primary education in the early schools of Richland county [...] when seventeen years old [about 1833] began to learn the tanner's trade at Fitchville, under his brother John."
