Clarissa Stewart, daughter of Anna (née Russell) and Galbreath Stewart, was born in 1830 near Greensburg (now Tinney) in Scott Township, Sandusky County, Ohio. Her family relocated in the early 1830s to Carroll Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, where her father became an entryman. (He died in 1848.) Clarissa Stewart is not found in the 1850 U.S. Census. Her mother and brother were then enumerated in Carroll Township. A decade later, Clarissa Stewart, a school teacher, was living with her mother in Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio.

"Clara Stuart" and David S. Bell were married on 30 October 1860 in Franklin County. She was then 30; he was a widower, 44, with three sons, and was a farmer in Huron County, Ohio. The couple became the parents of Cora Emeline and Edwin Stewart, and from the early 1860s resided in Greenwich Township, Huron County. Clarissa and David S. Bell were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers).

Comment

It is unclear how Clarissa Stewart and David S. Bell may have met. The locations where they were enumerated in 1860 are more than 80 miles apart (on modern roads). Perhaps through Quaker connections.
