Maria Anna Zweng, daughter of Veronika (née Reinhardt) and Gottfried Augustus Zweng, was born on 31 July 1844 in Füssen, Bavaria, according to Catholic baptismal records. Her family came to America in 1847.

Mary "Swing" and Jacob Reynolds, a farmer, were married on 12 June 1864 in McLean County, Illinois. Jacob Reynolds enlisted for 1 year of service on 1 February 1865 at Hudson, McLean County; mustered in Company A, 150th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, near Springfield, Illinois; and died from measles on 11 April 1865 in a hospital in Bridgeport, Alabama. Mary Reynolds filed on 7 June 1865 for a widow's pension. According to the pension papers, the couple had a son: Jacob W. Reynolds, born 25 March 1865 in Hudson—and died on 18 September 1865.

Mary "Reinolds" and veteran John "Beyer"—also a German immigrant— were married on 1 September 1866 in McLean County. The 1870 through 1900 U.S. Censuses show the Beier family farming in East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois. In the 1910 U. S. Census, the couple were living in Fisher, Champaign County, on John Beier's "own income."

The 1910 U.S. Census shows also that Mary Beier had a total of 10 children, but her Fisher Reporter obituary indicates that she and her second husband together had 10 children. This discrepancy may arise from Mary's only child with her first husband.

Children:

• Jacob W. Reynolds (25 Mar - 18 Sep 1865)

• Laura Beier Nagle (about 1866 - 5 Apr 1896)

• Henry Beier (Dec 1869 - before 1880)
