Robert, the son of John Alcorn and Margaret Carroll, married Mary Wade Hubler (his second cousin) in Hendersonville, Pennsylvania on 4 December 1851. They had at least four children: Ida, John Scott, Stewart Tacket, and Anna Mae.

He went West sometime after 1856 to join in the Gold Rush, returning to Iowa in November 1861. He owned an 80-acre farm just south of Riverside.

Alcorn mustered into Co. "G", 22nd Iowa Infantry as a Corporal on 26 August 1862. He was promoted through the ranks to Company Second Sergeant in July 1864, before being mustered out on 25 July 1865.
