During WWII, PFC Adkins was a member of M Company, 311th Infantry, 78th Division and served in the European Theater.

Shirley Adkins, 85, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at his residence in Indianapolis.

Born December 6, 1925 in Crawford County to the late Edward and Hazel (McDaniel) Adkins, he was a US Army veteran of WW II.

He retired from Metro Bus Company after 34 years of service. An avid golfer, he enjoyed bowling & gardening.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, M.I. Adkins; children, Shirlene (Terry) Harton, William Earl (Jeanine) Adkins; two grandsons, Jeremiah and Ryan Adkins; three sisters, Wanda Jones, Ferrell Brown and Betty Dawson; numerous nieces and nephews and caregivers, Lori Broderick and Linda Sheets.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 19 at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Avenue, with the funeral service conducted at 1:00 p.m.

He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East.
