Aged Resident Succumbs to Long Illness- Mrs. Caroline Hartwig, 91, Pioneer Settler, Dies Sunday Morning.

Mrs. Caroline Hartwig, 91, well known and one of the oldest residents of Davenport, passed away at her home, 4231/2 West Second street, Sunday morning at 5:30 o'clock after a lingering illness of eight years' duration.

The deceased was born in Lunn-Suedarmarschen, Germany, on Feb. 12, 1836. She came to America by sail boat in 1853,taking 13 weeks to make the ocean voyage. Owing to storms the small boat was forced from its course, landing in Galveston, Tex.

She resided in New Orleans for one year and hen traveled by boat up the Mississippi as far as LeClaire, IA., where she resided for a short time, later moving to Davenport. She was united in marriage to the late J.H.V. Hartwig on Sept. 15, 1854, who was the first proprietor of the Pennsylvania hotel, later building the Western House at Second and Scott streets in 1863. A few years later he became proprietor of the Scott House at Front and Harrison streets, which at that time was the most prominent hotel in the city. Mr. Hartwig preceded her in death 40 years ago.

During the civil war Mrs Hartwig served the northern armies in the capacity of war nurse.

Surviving are the following children. Julius Hartwig, Mrs. Alvina Kendall, Mrs. Thomas Pritchard, Mrs. William Schake, Miss Emma Hartwig, Albert Hartwig, and William Hartwig. One daughter, Mrs. Dora Nissen preceded her in death eight years ago in September. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late home. 4281/2 West Second street and will be private. Interment will be in the family vault in Oakdale cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted.

The body was taken to the Hill and Frederick mortuary and was returned to the home Sunday afternoon.
