George Wayne G.W. Alford, 80, of Joseph died Feb. 27 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bollman Funeral Home with military committal at the Enterprise Cemetery.
Mr. Alford was born Dec. 22, 1921, to George L. and Ruth Alford in Floyd, N.M. The family came to Wallowa County in 1925 and bought their family farm in 1936. He graduated from Enterprise High School in 1939 and attended Eastern Oregon Normal School in La Grande.
He served in the Navy during World War II, attending boot camp in Farragut, Idaho, and radio school in San Pedro, Calif. He then served as a radio operator aboard the USS Competent in the South Pacific. His ship was one of the first to sail in to Nagasaki, Japan, after the atomic bomb was dropped.
He later served with the Oregon State Police in Ontario. He farmed with his brother, Merle, for over 50 years and was a member of the VFW Post 4307.
Survivors include his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Clebert Alford of Portland, Glen and Helen Alford of Amity, Joan Tippett of Asotin, Wash., Aleene Alford of Joseph and other relatives.
His oldest brother, Merle, died earlier.
