"SAD DEATH OF M. F. BROWN. – PASSED FROM THIS LIFE SUNDAY NIGHT. – Funeral Services Held Wednesday Afternoon at the House. – On Monday morning last the sad news of the death of Mr. M. F. Brown cast a shadow over the community, as he had been a resident of our village for a number of years and was well known as a man of excellent habits and fine moral character, and was highly respected by all.
It was the writer's privilege to have known him long and well, and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years passed by. We will greatly miss his kindly smile and friendly greeting. He was a man with a pleasant word for everyone and won for himself the good will of all. Just in the prime of life, and until within the past year, looking the picture of health, it seems almost incredible that he has gone from our midst.
Milford Fillmore Brown was born at Black Creek, Nov. 22d, 1851. On June 3, 1873, he was united in marriage with Miss Lida Steenrod, youngest daughter of Washington M. Steenrod of Nile. In 1874 they moved to Kansas and engaged in business. In 1888 they returned to this state, where they have since resided, for the past eight years residing on the old Steenrod homestead, between Friendship and Nile.
He was the third child of a family of seven children and is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Bugbee of Wichita, Kansas, and Mrs. C. G. Shaffer of Cuba, N. Y.
For the past year Mr. Brown had been in poor health, but for the past six or seven months he has failed rapidly despite the efforts put forth by the best of physicians and nurses and untiring care of the devoted family.
Some time in May he was taken to the Wellsville sanitarium in hopes of help, but he was obliged to return home with little or no benefit, and since that time he has grown gradually worse until death came as a release from his suffering last Sunday evening at 11 o'clock. Bright's disease was the direct cause of his death.
Besides his sorrowing wife he leaves one daughter, Mrs. H. L. McGibeny of Nile. The sympathy of all go out to the sorrowing ones in this their hour of grief.
The funeral services were held at the house yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. F. S. Squyer officiating and paying a beautiful tribute to the memory of the departed one. Rev. A. J. C. Bond offered prayer. Burial was at Maple Grove cemetery.
The K. O. T. M., of which the deceased was a member, and also the L. O. T. M. sent beautiful flowers.
[Poem by Rev. F. S. Squyer]
Among those present from away were:
