Vernon Cobb, age 99, of Pensacola, FL, passed away peacefully at Homestead Village Nursing Home on July 25, 2010.
Mr. Cobb was born in Bagdad, FL, on November 26, 1910. He began work at the tender age of 16 for the Bagdad Land and Lumber Company after assisting with the clean-up of the town of Bagdad after the famous hurricane of 1926. When the mill closed in April 1939, Mr. Cobb moved to Pensacola and lived there for the rest of his life. During World War II, Mr. Cobb worked at the Pensacola Shipyard installing engines into Liberty Ships. Toward the end of the war, Mr. Cobb began working Civil Service at Pensacola NAS and worked there until he retired as a supervisor in 1976. He frequently stated that he loved every day of his employment at NAS.
Mr. Cobb was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, and was admired by his family and friends for his caring spirit and thoughtfulness. Mr. Cobb was known for his outgoing nature and his overt friendliness to everyone he met during his life. Mr. Cobb married his childhood sweetheart, Agnes, and was married to her for 66 incredible years until she died in 1993. Mr. Cobb loved baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves, college football, politics, reading the newspaper, his church, Christmas, everyday life in Pensacola, especially eating at Joe Patti's Deli and spending time with the many members of his family and his countless friends. He cherished his upbringing in Bagdad and told numerous stories to those who knew him about his childhood and years working in the mill.
Preceding him in death was his beloved wife, Agnes Cleghorn Cobb; his parents, Prella Cobb Pooley and William Henry Pooley; two brothers, Ben Henry and Lester Pooley; and his much loved daughter-in-law, Suzanne Johnson Cobb.
Mr. Cobb is survived by his devoted only child, Jimmie 0. (Rip) Cobb, Sr., and his grandchildren, Edith Lundquist, Jimmie 0. Cobb, Jr. (Cheryl), Christine Salter, and Richard Cobb (Molly). He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Christina Baker (Quin), Katherine Gamer (Tim), Jessica Cobb, Meagan Porter (Brian) and his namesake, Vernon Bryant Cobb. Mr. Cobb was proud to also have three great-great-grandchildren, Blakeley Baker, Quin Baker, Jr. and Addison Garner. Mr. Cobb was also survived by his sister-in-law, Annette Pooley, and very special friends, Betty Graves, Anice Presley Smith, Jane Gates and Bee Coy.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Brentwood Assembly of God Church. Officiant will be Pastor Michael Poston. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Harper Morris Memorial Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Quin Baker, Bryant Cobb, Jimmie Cobb, Richard Cobb, Ronnie McLellan, Jr. and Mark O'Brien.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to The Bagdad Village Preservation Association or Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504.
The family would like to express gratitude to the incredible staff of Homestead Village Nursing Home and the staff of Covenant Hospice, especially Mrs. Joan Maddox, for their steadfast love, friendship, devotion and care given to Mr. Cobb during the last two and a half years of his life.
