He was a son of Col. A. Hughes Dillard and Martha Ann Wilson.
His paternal grandfather was General John Dillard and his paternal grandmother was Matilda Hughes.

John married Lucy Dillard Spencer, on 2 July 1872.

He died of smallpox while attending medical school in Baltimore, Maryland.

Twelve days later he fought at the Battle of New Market, VA.
He went back to V.M.I. but resigned later to join the Confederate Army.

He resigned his Judgeship and was elected Commonwealths' Attorney in 1874.
His nephew and namesake graduated from V.M.I. in 1896.
He died 16 March 1875 in Orlando, Florida and is buried at Marrowbone, Va.
