Sam was the son of William H. Abbott and Mary Jane (Baker) Abbott. He married first Martha Thomas "Mattie" Davidson on December 4, 1876, in Gibson County, Tennessee.

According to the 1900 census, Sam and Mattie were the parents of eleven children with only eight living at the time of the census--Mary Ludie "Mollie," Tom, Calvin, Kate, Robert, Sid, Joe, and Auvern Abbott.

Three small gravestones with only initials beside the gravestone for Sam and Mattie name the other three children--A. B., S. D., and W. J. Abbott.

Sam married second Anna Laura Edmonds on October 31, 1920, in Gibson County, Tennessee.
