Birth: May, 1847
Virginia, USA
Death: Nov. 15, 1917
Taylor County
West Virginia, USA

Catherine was the daughter of William Rogers, Sr. and wife Rebecca. She married Philip Gordon Austin in March 1863 in Taylor County, Virginia. They had thirteen children: Mary; James; Jane; Oliver; Ida; Cassa; George; Robert; Senora; Samuel; Eve; Minnie; John.

Sometime after the youngest was born Gordon and Catherine either divorced or separated, and they lived apart for many years. It appears the household broke up before 1889. Beginning in April 1889, family members began living in the poorhouse (County Infirmary) off and on for years. Catherine, six children and Elizabeth Jane's illegitimate baby were admitted that April and stayed for 85 days; Gordon was admitted April 13th; all were discharged June 24th. In Dec 1894 four children and Ida's illegitimate baby were admitted; in January 1895 P.G. (Gordon) joined them, and all but the two youngest were discharged in Mar. 1897. From 1904 onward, Gordon was a familiar face at the poorhouse, spending the last three and a half years of his life there. From 1907 onward, they listed him by his nickname, Gordy. Many of the children cannot be located in the 1900 census; it appears they moved from household to household rather than having a regular home.

Among Gordon and Catherine's children, there were two illegitimate babies born to daughters, three other children didn't marry until 35, 38 and 45, Oliver Perry was divorced once and then went on to have a second family, Robert Lee was divorced, Nora was divorced at least twice, and John was divorced at least once. George and Minnie are the only two who married fairly young, stayed married, and had the usual large family.
