"Susanne Vaughndorf Alexander, 81, of Savannah, Georgia, widow of Louis Rich Alexander, died Monday morning, May 25, 2009, at Candler Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Morris Vaughndorf and the late Lena Rosenthal Vaughndorf. Sue attended Barnard Street School, Massie School, Chatham Junior High and graduated from Savannah High School in 1945. She graduated from Armstrong Junior College in 1947 with a liberal Arts degree, then returned to receive a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1980. Mrs. Alexander was married in 1950 to Louis R. Alexander of Savannah for 46 years until his passing in 1996 and worked for a brief period at Alexander Grocery Company, whose building is now Alexander Hall at SCAD. Sue was a tireless volunteer and leader in several community service organizations including the Savannah Council of Jewish Women, United Jewish Appeal, Savannah Women's Federation and Georgia Federation of Women. Serving as President of the Savannah Council of Jewish Women for three years in the early 1960s, she continued as their first vice-president. Sue also served as first vice-president of the Savannah Women's Federation, receiving from the Georgia Federation a "Useful citizen Award" in 1972. Very active in the PTA, she served as President of the PTA at Jacob G. Smith (1967) and Savannah High School (1970), receiving a Certificate of Achievement in 1970 from the Georgia Council of Parents and Teachers. Sue later was awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the National Congress of Parents and Teachers after many years of service. Other volunteer participation included the Friendship Club, promoting mental health, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of the United States, for which she was given recognition in 1978. But her greatest service, pleasure and reward was as a dedicated homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by three sons, Henry, Lee and Michael Alexander, a sister Betty Vaughndorf, a daughter-in-law Tawnya Fondren, and beloved grandchildren Lauren, 13, and Ben, 15, who reside in Austin, Texas with their parents. The family will receive friends from 6 o'clock until 8 o'clock Tuesday evening at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue. The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Arnold Mark Belzer. Remembrances: Congregation Mickve Israel, Museum Fund - Post Office Box 816, Savannah, Georgia 31402-0816." from Savannah Morning News.
