The handsome young man pictured has compiled an enviable record in the Government service, serving with the Engineer Department continuously since 1898. His employment in the Chicago District dates back to April of 1908.

Despite his years of service he is very active, filling in his leisure time in the pursuit of his favorite hobby -- cabinet making and fancy woodworking. Some of his time must be spent in light reading, as he is noted for his ready wit and subtle humor.

It is rumored that every now and then our subject likes a certain horse. However, his wife couldn't verify the rumor. This one may puzzle you quite a little, but if you give up we will have the solution for you next month.

Thomas or "Ross" as he liked to be called was born in Wilmington Delaware to Joseph Alexander Gallant and wife Catharine (Mendenhall) Gallant. His parents had three children. Thomas of this Memorial page, Joseph Alexander Gallant Jr. who died as a young child and Sarah Gallant.

Thomas "Ross" Gallant married Margaret Leech Lord in 1898 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Listed in the order of their birth are their five children: Joseph Alexander Gallant born in Wilmington Delaware; Elizabeth Lane Gallant born in Beaver Pennsylvania; Margaret Lord Gallant also born in Beaver Pennsylvania; and twins Thomas Ross Gallant Jr., and his brother Donald Downs Gallant born in Chicago Illinois. Their father worked as an engineer for the U.S. Government and during his career was sent to different locations.

Thomas was a talented "pen and ink" artist as one can see from the attached drawing he did of a horse and rider in 1908. A treasured keepsake in the family now owned by a grand daughter - Marilynn (Hill) Duncan. He also played the violin as recorded in a picture of him that is owned by a descendant.
