Death: Aug. 12, 1995

George was born of a family with deep roots in Monongahela, Pennsylvania. He was pre-deceased by his mother Iva Fitch Staib and his father, Lewis George. The Staibs and Fitchs/Fitzpatricks had been living in Western Pennsylvania since long before the Civil War and were both merchants and coal barons. George lived with his beloved grandfather John Harold who had a great influence in his life and in most cases was his protector. George enlisted in the U.S. Army cavalry at an early age and served in Panama in the early 1930's. While in the service George's best friend was his horse, Dan. After leaving the service George married and he and his wife, Alice settled down in West Brownsville Pennsylvania and had two sons, George and Dale. A third child was later born after the family had moved to the State of California. George had an interesting working life. He was a coal miner in Western Pennsylvania, operating a loading machine. He also worked as a fireman on the railroad, as a hand on a river paddlewheeler on the Monongahela River, as a truck driver and for a good part of his life as a machinist. George was also very active in the Boy Scouts and gave freely of his time. He was also an excellent artist and didn't develop that talent as much as he should have. In his retirement George spent a great amount of time doing good works in various Masonic organizations including the Shriners and the Blue Lodge. He and Alice delighted in traveling to Masonic conventions and at times going back home to Brownsville to visit friends and family. In his later life he became ill and fought a long and courageous battle against cancer. He eventually lost his battle and on his death George was mourned by his family and his many friends.
