James M. "Scoop" Albright

James M. "Scoop" Albright, age 80, passed away at 2 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2010, at Galena Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Galena, following an illness.
Scoop was born Aug. 26, 1929, in Galena. His parents were Roy and Helen (Tipton) Albright. He was a lifetime resident of Galena.
He graduated from Galena High School in 1947, where he was named to the All Conference football team.
As a young man, he played baseball with the Baxter Springs Whiz Kids.
In 1950, he entered the U.S. Air Force for three years.
Upon his return home, he attended NEO College for two years before being employed at Vicker's Inc., Joplin, Mo. He worked at Vicker's for 34 years, retiring in 1987.
He continued to be an avid sports enthusiast, as he was involved with youth baseball each summer. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing.
In his later life, he loved to watch his grandchildren participating in sports activities.
Scoop was a lifetime member of the Galena Elks Lodge No. 677, where he was awarded the Citizen of the year in 1971.
He was also a member of Sixth Street Baptist Church, Galena.
Surviving are three sons, Danny Albright, (wife, Sherry), Galena, Dennis Albright (wife, Cindy) Galena, and Ray Albright (wife, Tracy), Galena; two daughters, Penny Carlisle (fiancÚ, Mark McBride), Galena, and Carol Buttram, (husband, Larry), Little Rock, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, at Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena.
The eulogy will be given by Danny Albright. Burial rites will be conducted by the Galena Elks Lodge.
Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.
There will be no public viewing.
The family will host a reception at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the Performing Arts Center, Galena High School.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to either the GHS Letterman's Club or the Elks National Foundation in care of the funeral home.
