"Professor George Allen, LL D, who had for years occupied the chair of professor of ancient languages in the University of Pennsylvania, died at his residence in this city yesterday. He was born in Chittenden county, Vermont, December 17, 1808 and served as a Judge in that state by an appointment from the Legislature. In 1845 he was elected professor of ancient languages in the University of Pennsylvania, which chair he has since held. He co-operated with Provost Stille in the reconstruction of the University, and as a compliment the trustees conferred on him the degree of doctor of laws. He
married Mary Hancock Whittington, a descendant of John Hancock, the marriage having been celebrated by Ralph Waldo Emerson. He contributed to scientific reviews and produced a
number of works."
