Don B. Daily, 62, President of Gallatin Steel Company passed away on March 13th after a short illness. "Don was a significant source of the success of Gallatin Steel. He was an outstanding leader who brought out the best in all the people around him," said Tobin Pospisil, General Manager Administration and Finance for Gallatin Steel.
Don, a native of El Paso was a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso. He began his career at the US Steel plant in Baytown, Texas. Don was hired by Georgetown Steel in 1974, rising through the ranks from Melt Shop Superintendent at the Beaumont, Texas mill to the position of Executive VP of Georgetown Industries by 1996. He joined Gallatin Steel Company in 1998, and was quickly promoted to VP and General Manager. Don was named the company's President in May 2004.
In addition to his position at Gallatin Steel, Don served as Chairman of the Steel Manufacturer Association (SMA) from 2006-2008. He was nominated by the employees of Gallatin Steel, and was awarded the SMA's 2007 Achievement in Safety Award in acknowledgement of his safety contributions to the steel industry.
"Don was an important contributor to the rejuvenation of the American steel industry, as well as an outstanding leader and person. He will be sorely missed, not only by those of us associated with Gallatin, but also by the entire industry," said Lou Schorsch of ArcelorMittal, a parent company of Gallatin Steel. Adds Mario Longhi, President and CEO of Gerdau Ameristeel Corporation, Gallatin's other parent, "In addition to being a first class steelmaker, Don was a wonderful person and a great friend to many people. He will be missed greatly by all who were fortunate enough to know him."
Funeral services will be held at the Florence United Methodist Church on March 17th at 10 am. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Bridge City, Texas. His wife Beverly, sons Warren and Forrest Daily, and two grandchildren, survive Don. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Florence United Methodist Church, the Sugar Bear Fund in Surfside Beach, SC, or the Gallatin County Humane Society.
