Fr. Eugene J. Bauhs, 82, a retired priest of the Diocese of Madison, died on April 1, 2004.
Father Bauhs was born on Nov. 3, 1921, in Madison, the son of Joseph and Catherine Esser Bauhs.
He attended St. James Grade School and one year at Edgewood High School.
He then attended St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, where he completed his high school, college, and philosophy studies.
He studied theology at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
He was ordained to the priesthood on May 29, 1948 at St. Raphael Cathedral, Madison, by Bishop William P. O'Connor.
Father Bauhs served as associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Baraboo, and St. Raphael Cathedral, Madison, until being appointed pastor of St. Joseph, Avoca, with the mission of St. Malachy, Clyde.
He served as associate pastor of St. Mary of the Lake, Westport; pastor of St. Mary Parish, Pardeeville, with the mission of St. Andrew, Buffalo; pastor of St. Andrew, Verona, with the mission of St. William, Paoli; pastor of St. Mary, Pine Bluff;
He also served as associate pastor of St. Ann, Stoughton, where he also served as chaplain of Nazareth House; and associate pastor, St. Joseph, East Bristol.
He also served as diocesan chaplain for the Girl Scouts. He retired in 1989.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, April 5, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Saint James Catholic Church, 1128 Saint James Ct., Madison.
Bishop Robert C. Morlino was the main celebrant.
Msgr. Douglas L. Dushack, pastor of St. Bernard's Church, Middleton, was the homilist.
Burial was held at the Resurrection Cemetery in Madison.
A Visitation was held at Saint James Catholic Church on April 5, 2004 from 10 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass.
