On Thursday, January 14, 2016 John Briggs, passed, he was 81.
John's life began in Royal, AR when he was born February 1, 1934 to the late Lee and Alice Bledsoe Briggs.
John was also predeceased by his first wife, Cedell Greathouse Briggs; his two children, Alicia “Sugar Bowl” Harden and Earl Briggs; his siblings, Allen Dinky Tweddle, Chester Briggs and Minnie Mae Briggs, a daughter-in-law, Carol Briggs.
His legacy and memories will include his wife, Rev. Marilyn Lightner Briggs; his children, John Russell (Connie) Briggs, Carl Briggs (Tina) and Andrea (Orlando) Roberts all of Royal, AR; a special son, Brian(LaQuinta) Lightner of Dallas, TX; thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
He accepted Christ at an early age and also received his early education at the Greenwood Baptist Church in the Flatwood Community. He was a 1953 graduate of the Historic Langston High School.
John excelled in track and received a scholarship to Arizona State University. In 1954 he married Cedell Greathouse and their union was blessed with five children.
After her passing he later married Marilyn Lightner.
He was retired from Malvern Mineral Company. John was a faithful member of Cottrell Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. He served as a Steward, Trustee, member of the Official Board, Board of Christian Education, Male Chorus and Lay Leader. As a member of Beebe Chapel C.M.E. Church in Wrightsville, AR he served as Co- Lay Leader. He was a Chaplain for the Arkansas Region West District Ministers Spouses. He was also noted for his powerful and heartfelt prayers. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and gardening. John was a man of great integrity and never met a stranger. He had the same Christlike spirit each time you talked with him.
John has fought a good fight, he has finished his course and he kept the faith. Well done thou good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a few things, now you are ready to be offered up to be ruler of many.
Funeral service will be Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 12:00 PM at Cottrell Chapel C.M.E. Church with Pastor James Story officiating.
Burial will follow in Briggs Cemetery, Royal, AR.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 20, 2016 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at the church.
The family will be at 251 Old Bear Road, Royal, AR. Arrangements are entrusted to Carrigan Memorial Funeral Services.
