George F. Harris, born 1837 in England, came to America with his wife Emma Stanger in 1865 with their only child, George J. age 5. According to the 1870 census, George was a furniture dealer. In 1880 census, he owned a butcher shop and was a real estate man who owned several properties. On the night of Aug. 16, 1886, according to a Chicago Tribune article dated 28 Aug. 1886, George and 2 companions were drinking in a bar under Dale's drugstone when one Thomas Osborne picked up Haris' bone-handled cane and struck him with great force on Harris' head. He was taken to County Hospital but soon recovered enough to walk home. He later underwent surgery, but died at his home on 27 August at 5 o'clock in the evening. Thomas Osborne was held over for trial. George F. Harris is buried in Chicago's Graceland Cemetery with his wife Emma.
