Mrs. Ellen (Ridge) Sternam Caldwell was born in 1830 in Arkansas. Her father was a Cherokee farmer named Jefferson Ridge and her mother, Corine King, described as a Black woman by family members. Ellen's husband, Mr. Edmond Caldwell, was born about 1832 in Tennessee. According to the 1870 Austin, Travis County, Texas census records, Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Caldwell had four daughters: Nancy, Sophia, Elizabeth and Mary, and one son, Lewis Caldwell. Per family records, Mr. Edmond Caldwell was the brother-in-law of Frances Jane Ridge Densmore and Mr. Ellis Ridge Densmore Sternam. Please note: Sternam and Densmore were the surnames of their former slave owners. Mr. Edmond Caldwell was the father of Mrs. Jennie Caldwell Daggett. Also, their son Mr. Lewis Caldwell who lived and worked in Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Texas at one timne. Another son, Mr. George Caldwell and his family lived in Pflugerville, Travis County, Texas. Per the 1880 records, Edmond Caldwell and his family were living in Travis County, Texas. However, from old family pictures found, Edmond Caldwell also had relatives in Calvert, Robertson County, Texas.
