A celebration of Mr. Allen's life is scheduled as follows: Visitation on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Roth Funeral Chapel. Visitation will also be at First Christian Church of Paducah at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, until the funeral hour at 2:30. Officiating will be Rev. Keith Tilford, Rev. Jae Gottman and Rev. Joe Owsley. Pallbearers will be Greg and Bo Skidmore, Keith Owsley, Randy McCune, Ryan Barrett and Michael Skidmore. Burial will follow at Maplelawn Cemetery.
Mr. Allen was born to T.O. Allen and Dessie Tapp Allen on June 24, 1912. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Gertrude Childress Allen (2003); his brother, O.T. Allen; sister, Benny Allen Crice and husband, Fred Crice; and brother-in-law, J.D. Bradford.
Surviving are four children, James Allen Jr. (Barbara), Carolyn Owsley (Joe) and Betty Skidmore, all of Paducah, and Barbara Allen McCune (Jimmy) of Evansville, Ind.; 10 grandchildren, Lisa Hughes (Ron), Greg Skidmore and Carla Hagood (Tim), all of Paducah, Bo Skidmore (Wendy) and Lana Suiter (Phil), both of Nashville, Tenn., Jackie (Dave) Barrett, Randy McCune (Robin) and Jill (Jeff) Locher, all of Evansville, Ind., Keith (Melody) Owsley of Racine, Wis., and Kenny (Karen) Owsley of Stuart, Fla.; 20 great-grandchildren, Jamie, Tanner and Christy Hagood, all of Paducah, Michael Skidmore of Paducah, Sarah Holland (Nicholas) of Washington, D.C., Ryan, Aaron and Drew Barrett, Brit and Alex McCune, Jeffrey, Jory, Jobie and Justin Locher, all of Evansville, Ind., Courtney and Zachary Owsley, both of Racine, Wis., Colby and Madison Skidmore and Taylor and Andrea Suiter, all of Nashville, Tenn.
Also surviving are a sister, Ida Belle Allen Bradford of Paducah; a sister-in-law, Sue Harkey Allen of West Paducah; two nieces, Vicky (Larry) Livingston and Peggy (Tom) Hooper; three nephews, Craig Bradford, Bob Allen and Bill Allen; 15 great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.
Mr. Allen was the oldest surviving member of Bethel Christian Church, where he served as elder and other positions for over 80 years. He was instrumental in bringing the first water and modern telephone services to the Heath community, where he also served on the McCracken County School Board. He also was a member/officer of West McCracken County Lions Club, Paducah Elks Club, Optimist, Toastmasters and Odd Fellows.
