Mary Narcissis Stouder was born February 20, 1848 in Goshen Township, Clermont County, Ohio with her father, David Stouder (1822-1906). Mary’s mother, Eliza Jane Goodwin Stouder (1826-1852) died when Mary was 3 ½ years old. Mary’s sister Hannah (1846-1876) was 2 years older than Mary. Mary’s father, David Stouder, re-married in 1852 to Mary Anhatt Stouder who raised Mary and her sister Hannah along with their ten children.

Mary’s father , David Stouder, and Mary’s step-mother, Mary Anhatt Stouder, raised the following children: Hannah (1846-1876), Mary Narcissis (1848-1927), Eliza Lida (1854-1948), Catherine (1855-1917), Mary C (1856-1948), Josephine (1864-) John (1867-1932), Laura (1869-), Corrie (1870), Sarah A (1872-), Earnest (1874-), David E (1875-) and Maggie (1879-).

Mary’s father, David Stouder(1822-1906), was the son of Samuel Stouder (1790-1874) and Hannah Knott (1790-1830). Samuel and Hannah met in Washington County Maryland. They traveled to Goshen Township in Clermont County Ohio to what would be the Stouder Family Homestead. Mary’s grandparents, Samuel and Hannah married June 17, 1813 in Clermont county They had ten children between 1814 and 1830. Mary’s father David was the 7th child. Mary’s great grandparents, John Stouder and Sarah Sally Brown Stouder lived their married lives in Cambria City, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. It was Mary’s second great grandparents, Christian Stouder and Elizabeth Mueller who were born in Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. Christian and Elizabeth arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1733. Christian was 45 when he arrived in America. Their arrival evidence is found on 4 separate documents, one of which is the U.S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s.

So Mary Narcissis Stouder has interesting and well documented ancestors. To review, Mary’s “Stouder” parentage to date is as follows:
father is David Stouder (1822-1906), mother is Eliza Jane Goodwin (1826-1852)
grandfather is Samuel Stouder (1790-1874), grandmother is Hannah Knott (1790-1830)
second great grandfather is John Stouder (1740-1808), second great grandmother is Sarah Sally Brown (1743-1840)
third great grandfather is Christian Stouder (1688-1760), third great grandmother is Elizabeth Mueller (1688-) IMMIGRATED FROM THE NETHERLANDS

Mary grew up in Goshen Township, Clermont County, Ohio, on or near 6847 Stouder Road, Goshen OH. Mary’s childhood home is ½ mile north of the town of Goshen off of S.R. 28/ S.R. 132. Mary lived only 10 miles from her husband’s childhood home at 5240 Locust Road (Batavia, OH 45103 – Google address). Locust Street is just off SR 50 in a little town called Monterey, east of Owensville. It is easy to see how Mary met and ultimately married Zachariah.

Mary Narcissis Stouder married Zachariah Taylor Brunk (1846-1918) on March 13, 1868. Mary was 20 and Zachariah was 21. Mary and Zachariah lived on Locust Road in Monterey next door to Zachariah’s father, Joseph Brunk Jr.

Between 1869 and 1889, Zachariah and Mary, had seven children who grew into adulthood: Hulda Brunk Thomas (1869-1916), Harry Brunk (1872-1931), Mary Jane Brunk Cotterill (1875-1907), Bertha Brunk Huelsmann (1877-1909), Laura Emma Brunk Friend Price (1882-1920), Elmer Robert Brunk (1887-1950) and Lena Gertrude Brunk Thompson (1889-1919).

Mary lived nine years after her husband Zachariah died on October 24, 1918. Mary saw five of her children, all her daughters, die in her lifetime. Hulda, Mary Jane, Bertha, Laura Emma, and Lena Gertrude died before Mary’s death on December 23, 1927. The only children that survived Mary’s death were her two sons, Harry and Elmer. During Mary’s lifetime she had over 30 grandchildren. Many of them lived close to her and Zachariah and they each enjoyed the opportunity to know their grandchildren and watch them grow.

Mary was 79 years of age when she passed. She was buried alongside her husband, Zachariah in Sharon Cemetery located on Monterey Road about a mile from her home on Locust Road. Mary and Zachariah are buried next to their daughter Bertha Brunk Huelsmann. Bertha has a headstone. Mary and Zach do not have a headstone.
