"John Amburgey,62-year-old pastor of Patmos Free Will Baptist Church in Newton, died at his home on Aug. 14, 2002. He was licensed to preach in 1979, ordained in 1980, and had served as pastor at Patmos since 1997.
Rev. Amburger, a native of W. VA, and U.S. Army Veteran, was an alumnus of Hillsdale FWB College, and Salem Bible College, Brevard Com. College (FL) and Bethany Theogolical Seminaty in Dothan, AL.
He had pastored churches in AL, MS, and FL, before coming to Patmos Church in GA. In addition to his pastoral ministry, Amburgey served on various boards and committees. He was elected Sec'y of Georgia State Board on Camping (1986-'88; 1998-2002).
John Amburgey was known as a man with a sense of humor who supported and promoted every phase of denominational work.
Deacon T.E. Moye (Patmos Church) observed, "When Bro. John said something, you could count on it."
Funeral services are set for aug. 17 at Patmos FWB Church. Rev. Jim Foster and Rev. David Young officiated.
Rev. Amburgey is survived by his wife of 35 years, Bonnie Amburgey; one daughter, Jana Brooker, and two sons, David Amburgey and Daniel Amburgey."
