Death: Jan. 2, 1916

"The Balton family was among the first pioneers in the Iowa County-Parnell area. Michael Balton lived on the family farm northwest of Parnell until his death, leaving his widow with two small sons, Patrick and William. His widow married an O'Neil.
William Balton married Anna Hanson at St. Michael's Church in Holbrook on April 19, 1888. They lived on the farm. They had four children, Bridgie, born in 1889; Laura, born in 1890; Willard, born in 1895; and Ethel, born in 1896.
William and Anna were involved in St. Joseph's Church when it was established in Parnell. They donated one of the stained glass windows which is still there (1987).
Neither Ethel nor Willard ever married. Williard stayed on the farm until his death in 1963. Ethel taught school for many years in the Williamsburg School District. She sold the farm in 1964 and built a new home in Williamsburg. At the time of the sale, the beautifully hand written abstract showed the farm had been in the Balton family for 108 years. [that would be since 1856]
Bridgie married Francis Driscoll in 1921. They farmed in the Iowa City area until they bought a home in Iowa City in 1947. Bridgie died in 1949. Francis lived in the home until his death in 1973.
Bridgie and Francis had five children: Doris, Bernard, Clarence, Mary Irma, and Elizabeth. Mary Irma died in 1962.
Direct descendants of Bridgie and Francis, including children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren now number 56 (1987).
Ethel retired from teaching at the age of 70 years. She lived in her home in Williamsburg until her health failed and she moved to Colonial Manor of Amana in South Amana where whe still makes her home."
