Residence Wilcox County GA.; 19 year-old farm laborer living with wife, Elizabeth Jane Mitchell (married 5/5/1861).
Enlisted for 3 years' service or the duration of the war on 3/4/1862 at Abbeville, he was mustered into "E" Co. GA 49th Infantry as a Private.
Present on May & June 1862 Roll.
Absent, sick on July & August 1862 Roll; admitted with measles into Chimborazo Hospital #4, Richmond; transferred into Chimborazo Hospital #3 for rheumatism; granted 40-day Medical Furlough on 11/30/1862.
Present on Jan & Feb 1863 Roll.
He died of pneumonia at Camp Gregg, VA. Several of his fellow soldiers (John McCartney, Henry A. Barrett, William M. Gibbs) had tended to him, saw him die and buried him.
His widow filed a Settlement Claim on 1/7/1864. Almost exactly 59 years later, she applied for a Widow's Pension on 1/3/1893.
The 49th Infantry Regiment was organized in November, 1861, with men from Wilkinson, Talfair, Washington, Irwin, Laurens, Pierce, and Pulaski counties.
