|Birth: ||Oct. 19, 1895|
The obelisk marked the spot where the British surrendered to Washington which signaled the end of the Revolution. The obelisk was privately constructed by John W. Shaw, superintendent of the National Cemetery at Yorktown, Virginia. The monument was dedicated on October 19, 1895. After Shaw's death, the obelisk standing along Union Road remained in place with little care. The National Park Service dumped the obelisk in the woods off Allied Encampment Road, just off Goosley Road, in the late 1930's probably after 1934 when the last known photo was taken.
